OBJECTIVE:Pediatric medication is an important support for maintaining the life safety of children and ensuring the development of children's health. This article provides suggestions for the inclusion and improvement of children's medicines in China's Essential Medicines List. METHODS:Statistical analysis of pediatric medications and children-specific drugs in the National Essential Medicines List, comparison of differences in drug varieties, dosage forms, and specifications between the 8th and 9th editions of the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines for Children, and comparison of differences between the National Essential Medicines List (2018 edition) and the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines for Children (9th edition). RESULTS & CONCLUSIONS:The 9th edition of the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines for Children has made richer adjustments in the classification, variety, dosage forms, and specifications of pediatric medications compared to the 8th edition, improving their rationality. This provides better guidance for countries in selecting and supplying essential pediatric medicines, meeting the priority needs of basic medical and health care. Compared with the 9th edition of the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines for Children, there is still a significant gap in China's National Essential Medicines List (2018 edition). It is recommended that relevant departments develop a pediatric essential medicines list that is in line with China's national conditions, make detailed age group divisions for children, and encourage the research and development of pediatric-specific dosage forms and specifications. This approach will better support the health and development of children by ensuring access to essential medicines tailored to their needs. |
